Conservation Education Definitions PDF Imprimare E-mail

At the International Zoo Educators Conference in Vienna delegates were asked to write down their definition of “Conservation Education” I have looked through these and have written some of the answers here.

This would be a good exercise for you to carry out with staff at your establishments.

Conservation Education can be defined as the technicalities or logistics adopted for wildlife restoration campaigns. Any type of education that conveys environmental damage and results in improved natural resource management.

Promoting the preservation of fauna and flora using different media to convey the message.

The key word is education – which implies creating awareness, changing behaviour and habitats and providing skills and knowledge.  All this is focused towards wildlife conservation either in-situ or ex-situ.  Therefore there is little or no difference if Conservation Education is referred to as environmental education or zoo education, etc.

Conveying knowledge and attitudes with the specific intention of impacting human behaviour and eliciting positive actions on behalf of the environment and wildlife Is a methodology to raise awareness of the problems facing wildlife in general by giving more knowledge in an active way on different topics.

Providing information, activities and experiences to enable people of all ages to discover the world around them and the inter-relationship of species and the environment, as well as the relationship of man to the world.  Conservation Education aims to enable to make informed choises to act in a more sustainable way and thereby support the conservation of nature and natural resources.

The effort to conserve and increase awareness of the wildlife species and natural, fauna and flora through systematic methods, programs and activities and using educational tools as a medium to awake human feelings toward living together in a better world.

To become part of nature again through a better knowledge of animals and plants and through respect for them.  Conservation Education owes a duty, not only to children, but to each and every individual that lives on this planet – be they 0 or 100 years old.
